Happy New Year Folks!!
As 2008 disappears over the horizon with more than a few bruises on it's behind, we look forward to what 2009 shall bring, but first we want to have a little look over some choice moments from one of the craziest years in the mighty Paw's history.........
We kicked it off with a New Years gig at our very own Perth Concert Hall to a few thousand revellers and well, you do know that it was us Scot's who invented New Years Eve!
Next was an altogether more quiet affair as we stripped the sound down and performed an acoustic set supporting Roddy Hart at the Red Rooms Monday Night Thing at our hometown Theatre. A lovely night was had by all.
Fast forward to our trip up North to Dalwhinnie (twinned with Las Vegas!) where we put our stamp on the lochstock festival and I found out that snakeskin & peatbog ain't the best of friends!
Round about the same time, we released our second record - Stop the Time to a great reception with some fantastic reviews and you can buy your very own copy from our Store along with other fine $outhpaw merchandise!
Then the month that would finish most bands, and nearly did! July saw a trip down to play at The Musician in Leicester, then onto London where we played a kickass country rock acoustic set in a ska venue! We made it out alive and headed home to prepare for our now annual trip to Norway to take part in the Americana extravaganza that is Seljord. After 4 days of pedal steel, all night jam sessions, rhinestone suits and naked stalkers, we headed home to crown the summer, performing at the event of the century in our hometown of Perth, The Southern Fried Festival. The music flowed like the bourbon & we had a great time, hugely proud to be the representatives of the local talent.
The following few weeks brought a lot of changes, mainly our lead singer, writer & founder Gav had to climb down and put music on the back burner for a while to take care of family commitments. We got straight back to business with yours truly stepping up to the front and taking the bull by the horns. The first gig as a 4 piece? a live recording for the BBC, talk about a baptism of fire! You can see some of the songs we played on our Music page.
As the year wound down, we came full circle to another stage for the New Years bash at TheTaybank in Dunkeld, imagine it, a picturesque Scottish village pub with locals arm in arm singing Auld Lang Syne, a roaring fire to warm the very soul..... only the 'gig' was outdoors, as icicles formed on the microphone stand and fingers begged for mercy on the guitars, we had them rockin!
And that was 2008! So what of 2009?
Well we've already kicked it off with a great showcase gig down in Glasgow at Nice n Sleazy's playing alongside two great acts in Jericho hill & The Scuffers& we'll look forward to heading back down that way again in the future.
Next week we have a chance to hook up with our friends The Wilders who we met at Southern Fried, Owen & I are playing an acoustic set in support of one of the hottest honkytonkin bands you'll ever get the chance to see, if you can get a ticket, do it! I can't think of a better way to start the year than this!
Before I check out, we'd like to congratulate the winner of our Newsletter draw, Angie Harrison is now the proud owner of a fine quality $outhpaw t-shirt & a signed copy of Stop the Time. $outhpaw crashed into their set with “St. Peter’s Waltz” from their album “Buffalo Mansions”. Immediately one got the impression that they meant business with Owen Nicholson’s steel guitar sending shivers up the spine. Despite occasional sound problems which bedevilled their set Donny McElliott proved more than able to fill up the front role. “Esmerelda Red,” “Stop the Time” (dedicated to Gavin ) and a rousing cover of Las Vegas were hi octane performances with Owen in particular playing a blinder. Sounding tighter and rockier as a four piece they proved that they remain one of the foremost Scots bands working in the alt country vein. A rousing version of Highway to Hell as an encore was the topping on the cake.
